About LVA Conservatory Programs Admissions/Auditions Support Class of 2026 Students/Parents News & Accolades More Visual Design Overview Where your story begins is not where it ends. LVA is a bridge to the art world and beyond. LVA art students seek college education and majors in very diverse subject matter. Students have graduated to seek medical degrees, engineering degrees, architecture degrees, science degrees and yes, art degrees. LVA has worked with Junior and Senior level students through AP Studio Art coursework that harnesses a student’s ability to create, edit, process, experiment, revise and synthesize visual design projects. Students do not only make art, they are originators of unique concepts, they are visual activists and use their energy to change their world. Students have earned full-ride scholarships at The Cooper Union and School of Visual Arts NY. Students have been invited to attend RISD, MICA, Pratt, Parsons, UNLV, SFAI, Otis, CalArts, and many other 4 year colleges and universities with substantial scholarships. There is no one path that all students are mandated to walk at LVA. The LVA Way empowers each student with the resources to find and develop their identity, finetune their interest and turn their education into a passion that will lead into a career. Graduates of LVA have built careers in local government, entertainment, business, medical fields, education and, of course, the arts. LVA graduates have become designers, web developers and art teachers. Jennifer Main is a prominent working artist that graduated from LVA in Visual Design. Students are introduced and guided to mastery of traditional art media, new media, technology, lens-based arts, and time-based art forms through their chosen art major. This is a unique approach found only at magnet art programs like LVA’s. LVA offers majors in Film, Graphic Design, Photography, Sculpture and 2D Visual Design. Additionally, the humanities courses required at LVA also enhance a student’s ability to think, reason and be inspired by diverse stories in our local, state, national and worldwide histories. Program Curriculum The LVA curriculum is built similar to a college level art studio practice. Students are guided through a Foundation year of black & white media and mixed media exploration that establishes a core skill set with an introduction to drawing and painting techniques, art history, aesthetics and critical analysis. Second year further develops a knowledge base of color media in oil paint, color pencil, art history and concepts with mixed media experimentation quickly becoming mastery. Third year begins to emphasize the voice of the individual by further exploration of gouache paint, intaglio printmaking, oil paint, chalk pastel, oil pastel, history and using pivotal art movements as a stepping stone to creating art projects based on personal concepts for the AP Drawing portfolio. Fourth year is a senior thesis guided by art activism and the AP 2D Design curriculum. Projects begin during the summer months by developing a narrative and ideas focused on art as social activism. The senior year braids together the LVA experience and guides students through the college application process that begins early in the fall. Students are encouraged to tour colleges, attend national portfolio day events, interview with admission counselors to discuss portfolio and admission requirements for college entry. The fourth year curriculum includes silkscreen printmaking, advanced oil paint techniques, acrylic paint techniques, and combining the previous experienced media to empower experimental mixed media to create their senior AP 2D Design portfolios. This process has helped many students not only earn entry to some of the most prestigious art programs across the country, but to also be offered high level scholarships and full tuition based on the quality of their artwork. Students are empowered through their academic and creative education to harness their talents, develop their skills and to focus their energy on goals they have envisioned for their future. Visual Arts is a demanding Conservatory within the Las Vegas Academy that has guided students to create their future, and in turn, has helped many students earn many rewards. Program Accolades The Las Vegas Academy Visual Design Program has been recognized for its achievements in National and International adjudications, including: Scholastic Gold Key - multiple winners yearly Scholastic National Gold Key Scholastic Silver Key - multiple winners yearly Scholastic National Silver Key Congressional Awards - multiple winners yearly CCSD VOICE - multiple winners yearly Showgirl Legacy Foundation Art Contest - multiple winners yearly Program Outcome The college level approach at LVA results in students being able to draw, paint, sculpt, photograph, record and edit, click and drag and design with expert level outcomes. Most importantly, The LVA Way extends well beyond the classroom. Students are taught skills that transcend the canvas. Visual problem solving, creative thinking, creating, storytelling and visual communication can be applied to many, if not all the situations that students will encounter when they graduate. Students regularly participate in critiques; students discuss their own work and their peers work in constructive ways which helps students develop the ability to speak in public. This ability to clearly, constructively and relevantly communicate is a skill that many students have returned to express gratitude for during spring and summer breaks.

In 2018, a high school choir teacher recommended he pursue music at UNLV and take opera lessons with Alfonse Anderson, a professor of voice. Shelton enrolled as a vocal performance major and, since then, has become a multifaceted singer, capable of singing both contemporary and opera music. Shelton's media popularity, which grew during the pandemic, caught the eye of an ad agency seeking a singer for a 2021 Super Bowl commercial for the hiring platform Indeed. In the commercial he sings a rendition of Andra Day's "Rise Up". Currently he is pursuing a master's degree in vocal performance at UNLV and "sees himself singing, as a recording artist and a live performer in all facets of music" . Alumni Spotlight

Performance skills are built through creating and presenting ensemble works in concert three times a year from a multitude of different choreographers, as well as two auditioned original full-length shows. The program’s blend of dancers coming from all different teachers and training across the valley provides our young artists the opportunity to investigate their craft in a continually evolving, immersive, and cutting-edge environment. Program Curriculum The Dance Department fully covers Contemporary, Composition, Jazz, Ballet, Graham, Horton, and Post-Modern styles of dance. Students are placed in one of our eight levels of major block classes based on their maturity, commitment, discipline, artistry and technique. Our levels begin with Technique and Theory 1B and advance to Elements II dance technique class. Instructors place a high priority on building an ensemble in these classrooms, which enables students to build artistry and self-esteem through being a part of a collective group with a common focus. In addition to daily major block classes, each dance student is placed in at least one elective course that meets every other day. All Freshmen are placed in Ballet, Intro to Modern, or the Male Elective. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors audition for the elective(s) of their choice including Contemporary, Ballet, Intermediate or Advanced Modern, Intermediate or Advanced Jazz, Choreography and Ballroom. This option provides students the opportunity to focus on specific areas of need or interest as they progress through the program. Program Outcome The Dance Conservatory aims to prepare students to pursue dance in college, professional dance careers - or to simply enter the world as well-rounded creative thinkers with a strong work ethic and ability to work on a team. Many students go on with scholarships to 4-year prestigious dance college programs, while others become teachers in studios, performing arts high schools, and colleges across the country. Some go on to create dance companies of their own. Other students, who choose not to pursue a dance career, enter the general workforce with a multitude of skills: prepared to think outside of the box to solve problems, find the beauty in any situation, and live life as their art piece. Program Accolades The Dance Department boasts many alumni working as professional dancers. We have graduates in the Batsheva dance company, Body Traffic dance company, Lion King National Tour, Cirque du Soleil, two winners, and several contestants on So You Think You Can Dance, as well as many cruise ships and commercial dancers touring. Each September the Department hosts a college audition on campus, where colleges recruit students to attend their universities, as well as give out scholarships to outstanding students. All seniors are welcome to participate in the audition for the invited 10-15 colleges. We have students who have pursued dance at programs including Julliard, USC, NYU, Marymount Manhattan College, SUNY Purchase, Point Park University, California Institute of the Arts, Chapman University, John Hopkins University, Hart Conservatory, and Southern Methodist University, among many others.

A student shall not receive additional credit for the repeated course. The higher grade shall be recorded on the permanent record and the lower grade replaced with a repeated course notation (RP). A student may repeat a failed course one time to improve a grade. Regardless of the number of times the course is repeated, a grade of an "F" will only be removed once. If applicable, all other "F's" will remain on the transcript. All external credit options require prior approval from the Curriculum Office using the CCF-850 External Credit Application (contact us at x4200 to request a copy of the form). Academic Integrity There is a clear expectation that all students will perform academic tasks with honor and integrity, with the support of parents, staff, faculty, administration, and the community. Academic Advising & Registration Guidance Teachers Each student at LVA is assigned to a Mentorship/Guidance teacher. These Guidance teachers are teachers already on students’ class schedules, so that they are easily accessible on a frequent basis. CCSD Graduation Requirements Although the graduation requirements for a standard diploma will not change, the school district expects its students to be competitive in higher education and the workforce, and to be prepared to take full advantage of what the world has to offer beyond high school. The Clark County School District believes that all students must be prepared for the following post-secondary opportunities. Any student who completes course requirements but does not pass the Nevada High School Proficiency Examinations will receive a Certificate of Attendance rather than a diploma. The Clark County School District expects all students to meet the requirements of the 21st Century Course of Study. All students are required to take the ACT Plus Writing exam, in addition to completing course requirements, to earn a standard high school diploma. Students who wish to earn an Advanced Diploma or a College and Career Ready Diploma must complete additional credits in math, science, social studies/humanities, and electives. Click here to see diploma types. Students meet with their Academic Guidance Counselors each year—and as needed—to review progress, discuss diploma options, and select the courses that best support their goals for graduation, college, and careers. 2025-2026 Course Catalog Parents and students should be aware that LVA is committed to offering a rigorous and challenging curriculum . Student placement in classes is carefully determined using several factors, including teacher recommendations, previous grades in similar courses, MAP scores, parent input, and the student’s interests. Every effort is made to place students in courses that are appropriately challenging and aligned with their assessed abilities. Students are not placed in classes below their ability level. Students will be scheduled into the classes they select unless a course is filled or canceled. Course offerings are based on student requests and staffing availability. As a result, some courses listed in this catalog may not be offered once the master schedule is created. Courses selected during the spring Course Selection process are the courses students will attend for the entire 2026–2027 school year. Because schedule changes are very limited and only permitted under the schedule change policy outlined in the course catalog, parents and students are encouraged to choose classes carefully. 📘 Please refer to the course catalog below for details. 2026-2027 Course Catalog Academic Advising Each student at LVA is assigned a Guidance Instructor (Mentor Teacher) who is already part of the student’s class schedule, making them easily accessible throughout the year. During designated guidance periods, students meet with their Guidance Instructor to discuss academic concerns and receive individualized support. Guidance time provides students with essential information for success in high school, including college planning, ACT and SAT testing, career preparation, and access to valuable resources. Guidance Instructors monitor each student’s grades and attendance and meet with students individually on a monthly basis to assess progress and determine if interventions are needed. This mentorship model ensures every student has a consistent, supportive adult advocating for their academic and personal success. Ms. Miller Common application vs coalition Application What is a Coalition Application? The Coalition Application is focused on making college more accessible to historically underrepresented students, and its member schools are aligned with this mission. This means they must meet certain criteria regarding tuition costs, need-based financial aid, and graduation rates. What is the Common Application? The Common Application is a single online college application form used by over 900 colleges and universities. Instead of filling out the same general information—like your address, GPA, and extracurriculars— a dozen times, you only have to do it once. The Common App dashboard also helps you track necessary application documents (like your letters of recommendation) and important deadlines. Learn More Western undergraduate exchange America’s largest regional interstate tuition savings program The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is an agreement among WICHE’s 16 members, through which 160+ participating public colleges and universities provide steep nonresident tuition savings for Western students. Click here for the full list of participating WUE schools! Through WUE, eligible students can choose from hundreds of undergraduate programs outside their home state, and pay no more than 150 percent of that institution’s resident tuition rate. Since full nonresident college-tuition rates may exceed 300 percent of resident rates, WUE increases affordable higher-education choices for students, and minimizes the adverse impacts of student loan debt. Learn More Scholarship Information Scholarships are gifts. They don't need to be repaid. There are thousands of them, offered by schools, employers, individuals, private companies, nonprofits, communities, religious groups, and professional and social organizations. A scholarship is an award of financial aid for a student to further their education. Scholarships are awarded on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. College-related information and announcements are often sent via email through Naviance. If you are a parent and would like to receive the same email announcements that students get, you may add yourself as a parent on your student's profile page in Naviance Learn More Advanced Placement vs Dual Credit Taking dual credit or Advanced Placement (AP) classes in high school can help you get a head start on college and save time and money as you work toward a degree. Earning college credit before graduating from high school can also put you on track to graduate in less time and with less debt. Dual Credit Many high schools offer dual credit classes that count for both high school and college credit. Courses are usually taught by a certified high school instructor or are offered online. Advanced Placement Advanced Placement or AP courses are designed to give you the experience of an introductory-level college class while you’re still in high school. They are usually taught by a certified high school instructor. You can earn college credit for the class if you pass the AP exam given at the end of the course. It is a good idea to check with the colleges you are interested in attending to see if they will accept credit from dual credit and AP classes. In most cases, payment is required to enroll in dual credit classes. Payment is also required to take AP exams to receive college credit. However, credit earned through dual credit and AP classes is often less expensive than completing the same courses in college. To learn more about dual credit and AP classes offered at your high school, check with your high school counselor. Our program is unique in that we provide regularly scheduled small group instruction (sectionals), as well as individualized instruction from the directors and highly skilled paraprofessional staff. Program Outcome Students in the LVA Orchestra Program not only improve their musicianship but also learn valuable life lessons. This rigorous program teaches students how to develop time-management skills, the professionalism required to make it in any chosen field, and the importance of a strong work ethic and positive attitude. Upon graduation, students are prepared for admissions into any university, arts conservatory, or other career programs. The Orchestra program emphasize the development of basic skills necessary to become an independent musician, i.e., auditions, intonation, style, bowing, articulation, dynamics, rhythmic precision, blend, balance, tone, and basic music theory. Program Accolades The Las Vegas Academy Orchestra has won multiple awards and recognitions throughout the years, including the invitation to perform at The Midwest Clinic in 2003, 2009, 2014, & 2021, The Orchestra America National Festival in 2007, ASTA National Orchestra Festival in 2008, as well as many others. The students have traveled nationally and internationally to perform as a featured group to locations including the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria and the Auditorio de Zaragoza in Zaragoza, Spain, as well as traveling to Hawaii, New York, Boston, Connecticut, California, New Mexico, Chicago, and Salt Lake City. Our students have been accepted to prestigious colleges, conservatories, and programs throughout the nation and internationally in locations such as CIM, Juilliard, Indiana University, and the National Youth Orchestra. Our students also collaborate with, learn from, and perform with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the Henderson Symphony Orchestra as winners of the concerto competition.

Welcome to the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Library We are located directly across from the front entrance in Main Library Hours: 6:35am - 4:00pm Office Hours: 7:30am - 4:00pm (702) 799-7800 ex 4025 Mr. Shelby Guinn, Library Manager guinnst@nv.ccsd.net From its first day in September 1931, as Las Vegas High School Library, to today, as Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Library, our library consistently has been a place where students can access a varied collection of fiction, non-fiction, and reference books as well as gather together for research and homework projects; however, what began as a small high school lending library has become a multipurpose space, combining the literary and academic function of a library with the college and career resources of our newly created Success Center, located within the library. Formerly, as the Las Vegas High School Library, the space was elegantly filled with small-scale, natural material furnishings suitable for a student body of 360: solid oak tables and chairs, built-in wooden bookshelves lining the walls, and the epitome of original library furnishings, a hardwood cabinet, housing the card catalog, filled with typewritten cards to help patrons locate reading materials, all with bright shining linoleum underfoot. In its current iteration, as the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Library & Success Center, the facility is a larger scale space designed to accommodate our current student body of around 1,700 students. The oak and linoleum of old have given way to bright, modern furniture, contemporary carpet tiles, and a multitude of electronic teaching and learning resources. We are now a modern space in which LVA administration, faculty, staff, and students can engage in a wide variety of activities. We have a sizeable area for meetings and large group instruction, equipped with computer tables, laptops, projector and screen, and an audio system. Our Success Center hosts college visits here, counselors provide instruction in web-based college readiness software programs, and teachers hold classes here. We have areas where students can gather in groups or individually for homework, research projects, board games, and other social, and leisure activities. For those patrons who enjoy a quieter, more solo, environment, our library has several comfortable armchairs in well-lighted nooks and crannies, perfect for relaxing with a favorite book or current magazine. We have about 8,000 fiction and non-fiction titles and approximately 2,000 reference works in our collection. We also subscribe to over 20 magazine titles. Please refer to the LVA Library Lending Policies page to learn more about our library loan periods, overdue fees, and lost or damaged book fines. A modern library is incomplete without electronic tools and online research resources. Sixteen desktop computers are available for students to use for class research and homework assignments. All 16 desktops are connected to a printer, and copies are free. Also, we subscribe to over a dozen electronic database resources that students may access from any school computer. Please see the Online Database Resources page to view our collection of electronic resources. These provide students with up to date information on wide-ranging topics ranging from English/Language Arts to Business/Vocational Resources. Ask Mrs. Sabo for login credentials if you wish to use these databases from home. Along with our two major instructors, two full-time assistants/choreographers, and technical director, we welcome a host of talented para-professionals to work with the students one-on-one and in small group settings. Vocal majors perform one classical solo specifically selected for them at the end of each semester. Our students participate in Solo and Ensemble Festivals, with many of them as Command Performance finalists and winners throughout the years. They also sing in national and international competitions, placing along with the best singers of their age around the country. Vocal majors have the opportunity to audition for our On Stage and Contemporary Voices programs, allowing students to develop their stage presence and dive into various genres of popular music. Our students also get hands-on experience with recording studio sessions and filming music videos to be featured on our school's YouTube channel. Program Outcome Graduates of the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Vocal Department go on to study at the most sought-after university and conservatory programs nationally and internationally. College professors seek our students every year at many different recruiting events, held through our Student Success Center, including a specific Vocal College Day. Dozens of professors visit from all over the country to hold masterclasses with our students. The day ends with an opportunity for students to speak with the professors one-on-one in callbacks. Students have received hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship opportunities, to continue their musical education and further their careers in the arts. In the Vocal Department, we believe in student leadership and foster a culture of involvement and service. Over half of our 260 vocal students participate in some form of leadership. This allows for everyone to feel connected and invested in more than just daily class. We believe these opportunities are formative and give students ownership of their choir experience. Many of our students have found other passions that have led to fruitful careers in the future. Program Accolades As the voice of LVA, The Vocal Department has performed all around the community, including for Star Wars in concert, Andre Rieu, with the stars of the Broadway show Memphis, Producer Kenny Ortega, for President Obama, Foreigner, The Eagles, and with Hugh Jackman on his world tour in summer of 2019. For many of our students, their singing careers begin with our community performance engagements throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Our ensembles are in high demand for a wide variety of events - from holiday caroling, to patriotic event openings, to memorials, to celebrations. Students are able to fundraise for their travel expenses by sharing their amazing talents with our partners in the greater Las Vegas area. - College preparation timeline | Lvaschool
Student Absence Form Click Here Senior College Preparation Timeline College & Career Center Portal Anchor 1 August/September Register for the SAT and/or ACT if you didn’t take it as a junior, or if you aren’t satisfied with your score and want to take it again. (remember that your counselor can help you with fee waivers) Take a look at some college applications and consider all of the different pieces of information you will need to compile. The SAT test date most popular with high school seniors is this month. Visit with your school counselor to make sure you are on track to graduate and fulfill college admission requirements. If you’re ahead of schedule, consider taking courses at a local university or community college to get a jumpstart on college credit. Take every opportunity to get to know colleges: meeting with college representatives who visit your high schools during the fall, attending local college fairs, visiting campuses (if possible). Ask your counselor if they know of special campus visitation programs. Narrow down your list of colleges and begin to consider “safe,” “reach,” and “realistic” schools. Make sure you have the application and financial aid information for each school. Find out if you qualify for any scholarships at these schools. October Some colleges will have deadlines as early as this month. These would include rolling admission, priority, early decision, and early action deadlines. If you cannot afford the application fees that many colleges charge, ask your counselor to help you request a fee waiver. Finalize your college essay. Many schools will require that you submit at least one essay with your application. Request personal recommendations from teachers, school counselors, or employers. Follow the process required by your high school or provide a stamped, addressed envelope, the appropriate college forms, and an outline of your academic record and extracurricular activities to each person writing you a recommendation. Research possibilities of scholarships. Ask your counselor, your colleges, and your religious and civic groups about scholarship opportunities. You should never pay for scholarship information. File the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). File the form as soon as possible. 2023-2024 applications will be open in December with new FASFA guidelines. (October 1st is the USUAL start of the submission process.) Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov . November Finalize and send any early decision or early action applications due this month. Have a parent, teacher, counselor, or other adult review the application before it is submitted. Every college will require a copy of your transcript from your high school. Follow your school’s procedure for sending transcripts. Make sure testing companies have sent your scores directly to the colleges to which you are applying. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will be available this month, but cannot be completed before October 1. This is the form you will complete to find out what financial aid you are eligible to receive from the government. Ask your guidance office for a copy or visit www.fafsa.ed.gov This form should be filed online if at all possible. December Begin to organize regular decision applications and financial aid forms, which will be due in January and/or February. Register for the January SAT (If needed). It is the last one colleges will be able to consider for a senior. January Many popular and selective colleges will have application deadlines as early as January 1. Others have deadlines later in January and February. Keep track of and observe deadlines for sending in all required fees and paperwork. If necessary, register for the February ACT (some colleges will be able consider it). Ask your guidance office in January to send first semester transcripts to schools where you applied. At the end of the school year, they will need to send final transcripts to the college you will attend. It is time to file the FAFSA (no later than Feb 1). The sooner you complete it, the sooner you will have an idea of your financial aid options. Watch the mail for your Student Aid Report (SAR)—it should arrive four weeks after the FAFSA is filed. Feb/March/April While most of your applications will be complete and you are waiting to receive admission decisions, don’t slack in the classroom. The college that you do attend will want to see your second semester transcript. No Senioritis! Acceptance letters and financial aid offers will start to arrive. Review your acceptances, compare financial aid packages, and visit your final choices, especially if you haven’t already. May May 1 is the date when the college you plan to attend requires a commitment and deposit. When you’ve made your college decision, notify your counselor and the colleges. Send in your deposit by the postmark date of May 1. If you’ve been offered financial aid, accept the offer and follow the instructions given. Also notify schools you will not attend of your decision. Make sure that you have requested that your final transcript be sent to the school you will be attending. If you are “wait listed” by a college you really want to attend, visit, call and write the admission office to make your interest clear. Ask how you can strengthen your application.
